District 5: Three Republicans qualified for the seat Charles Bishop is giving up, but one dropped out because of health concerns. Of the two who remain, Thad Turnipseed is the stronger candidate. The Tuscaloosa resident is director of athletic facilities and capital projects for the University of Alabama.

Turnipseed is intent on reaching across the aisle in an effort to get things done. That shouldn’t be such a refreshing, novel idea, but in the gridlocked state Senate, it is. He supports strong ethics and campaign finance reform measures, and writing budgets based on previous years’ experience with tax collections instead of making projections that often are too rosy and result in spending cuts.

Coach gene Stallings and Thad Turnipseed spent the day on Thursday visiting with some of the great people that live and work in Tuscaloosa and Jefferson County. Coach Stallings met with people at the Mary Ann Phelps Center in Tuscaloosa and took time visit with everyone in attendance.

Paul Vercher and his staff greeted us at the US Steel plant in Fairfield where we had a fantastic lunch with some of the company managers and employees and invited everyone to meet coach Stallings and talk about the issues for District 5.

Hueytown was the next stop and we had a great reception at the North Highlands Baptist Church. A great number of Turnipseed supporters came out to visit with Thad and meet with Coach Stallings. The people of Hueytown have a great Mayor in Delor Baumann. Thanks to all of the great people of Hueytown that came out yesterday.

Our final stop was at Hanna Steel. Pete Hanna, David Monroe and all of the staff met us in the break room. Coach Stallings talked to them a little about Football and a little about politics. He introduced Thad and asked them to support Thad in the coming election in June. Thanks to all of the employees at Hanna that came out.

Thad Turnipseed, Republican candidate for State Senate District 5 responded to the announcement today that fellow opponent Howard Garrison is withdrawing from the race. “I certainly wish Howard the best, for his health and in his future endeavors,” Turnipseed said, “I respect anyone who makes the decision to run for public office. Mr. Garrison has run a great campaign. Our team thanks him for that and we wish him and his family the best.”

Turnipseed is one of two candidates now seeking the Republican nomination for the Alabama State Senate District 5 seat in the June 1st primary. “This has been a good race so far” he said. “I expect it to stay that way.” Turnipseed says he plans to continue his campaigning and neighborhood “meet-and-greets” throughout Tuscaloosa, Walker, Jefferson and Winston Counties in the next six weeks leading up to the race.

Turnipseed currently serves as Director of Athletic Facilities, Capital Projects and Events with The University of Alabama Athletic Department. He also serves as Director of Football External Affairs with the UA athletic department. In addition, he is owner of Turnipseed Enterprises, a Tuscaloosa homebuilding company. Turnipseed is married to Melissa Nix Turnipseed, a native of Jefferson County. The couple has four children. Turnipseed’s detailed plan for District 5 can be found at www.voteturnipseed.com.

Issues of concern in District 5 include employment, recession recovery, and a desire to change the political wrangling in Montgomery that prevents timely, practical solutions to major problems. As a small business owner and administrator for University of Alabama Athletics, Turnipseed has faced issues ranging from meeting payroll as a small business owner to working with large groups on multi-million dollar projects, with success at all levels.

Thad Turnipseed, a Tuscaloosa resident, has announced his candidacy for State Senate District 5.

Turnipseed will be a candidate in the Republican primary on June 1. Other Republicans seeking the spot are Howard Garrison and Greg Reed. Seeking the Democratic nomination is Brett Wadsworth and Bill Cleghorn.

Turnipseed said he respects his competition in the Republican primary, but he said he feels he’s the most “blue collar” candidate.

“I’m more blue collar than anybody in the race,” he said. “I think I connect with Walker County people more than any other person in the race. By that, I mean that I’m hard working and I’m a good, family man like the people of this area.”

Despite deciding to run as a Republican for specific reasons, toeing the party line isn’t a main concern for Turnipseed.

“I’m conservative. I believe in small business. I also don’t believe in big government, but being a Republican is not what drives me,” he said. “I want to put the people back into politics.”
