You’ve probably heard a lot of candidates talk about  improving infrastructure during their campaigns.  To put it simply, when we improve our infrastructure in District 5 we are improving our roads, bridges and highways and literally paving the way for more businesses and industries to locate in our area. And that creates jobs and fosters a prosperous business climate for Alabama.   There are many ways I believe I can help improve our infrastructure if elected as your State Senator. Here are the issues I plan to focus on:

  1. Nearly 30 % of Alabama bridges are considered obsolete and The Alabama Department of Transportation reports that its ongoing highway maintanence program is underfunded 50%. Alabama ranks 38th in the nation in gasoline tax rates. The existing system can not possibly meet the funding demands for a safe and efficient highway program. An addition funding source must be implemented if we want to compete in this global economy.
  2. If elected I will push for legislation that further encourages the use of Private Public Partnerships (PPP).  This funding mechanism allows for private dollars to be harnessed to design, build, and maintain roads, bridges and other infrastructure. By using private dollars for high priority projects that need to be implemented quickly, the ALDOT could use its limited funds on other necessary projects that may not have ever gotten funding.
  3. If elected I will push for legislation that establishes a State Transportation Commission.  These posts would be appointed by the Govenor, and Lt. Govenor with alternating terms. One commisioner would come from each of the US House Congressional Districts.
  4. Finally, I will fight for every available dollar of highway funds for needed projects in District 5.
